Sulfonamines

Sulfonamides are any amide of a sulfonic acid, i.e., RS(=O)2NR′2. Sulfinamides are amides of sulfinic acid and contain a sulfur-oxygen double bond and a sulfur-nitrogen single bond. Sulfonamides exhibit biological activity, such as a moiety in receptor ligands and binding dynamics. Sulfonamide derivatives can also demonstrate synthetic applicability, such as the ability to directly introduce a protected nitrogen functionality into a molecule. Sulfinamides are commonly reacted with aldehydes to provide chiral amines upon addition of organometallic reagents and deprotection.
