Amines

Amines have relevance in a wide range of applications from materials science to biological systems. Amines are compounds in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in ammonia have been replaced by an organic functional group. Amines are found in many biologically active molecules..Amines are derivatives of ammonia, wherein one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by a carbon chain substituent, to become a primary, secondary, tertiary amine, or a quaternary ammonium moiety. Amines are functional group compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom bonded to hydrogen atoms or to alkyl or aryl groups. If the substituents (other than hydrogen atoms) are alkyl groups, the resulting compounds are termed alkyl amines. The amine functional group contains a basic nitrogen atom with a lone pair of electrons. Amines are generally weak bases. Further, most amines are organic bases. This organic compound has multiple uses in industry and is widely found in nature.
